Affordable and clean energy is one of the main goals of the 'Green Deserts' concept:

A solar greenhouse shall provide all the energy for growing the food or vegetation inside. If instead such a building is foreseen to be used as accommodation or workspace for e.g. technicians or scientists, it shall produce all the basic electricity needed to run the household or facility.

Pathways between all the houses shall also be covered by solar cells. By this, these areas not only provide shadow and shelter from dust or rain, they also provide additional electricity which can be used by local communities, sold to the open market, stored, or used as backup electricity if single solar cells or greenhouses are temporarily not able to produce all the electricity needed themselves.

And the more surplus, the more energy can be given away freely to the local communities or sold to the open market. Accordingly, one basic concept of the ‘Green Deserts’ project is the establish a maximum roof space covered by solar cells.
