The Sahara Desert can be seen as the cradle of hurricanes that run across the Atlantic Ocean and finally devastate the Caribbean islands as well as the Southern East coast of the United States.

Due to the air pressure and the resulting air flow, trade winds cross the Sahara region from Northeast to Southwest. The longer the flow track, the dryer the winds.

When such very dry winds meet the Atlantic Ocean, the warm air starts to gather humidity again. The growing water content results in a growing cloud front which gains energy while being pushed and rotated by the Tropic high- and low-pressure cells.
